The Fraunhofer CIRCONOMY® Hubs are dedicated to the challenge of promoting a sustainable economy through highly specialized research. In the face of global resource scarcity and rising costs due to limited availability of materials in the construction industry, the CIRCONOMY® Hub "Material Cycles in the Construction Sector" aims to transform construction waste into valuable resources. The Hub's mission is to support the transition from linear value chains to circular value creation cycles by promoting networks and industrial symbioses. The Hub's technological development focuses on improving the separation and recycling of building materials, the development of recyclable and bio-based materials and the integration of detection and sorting systems. These initiatives are intended to facilitate the recycling of materials, which has previously been made more difficult by regulatory requirements and different periods of use.
The overarching goal is to strengthen the concept of sustainability in the construction industry and to complete the cycles of individual building materials through technological and socio-economic research and the transfer of knowledge and innovations. The CIRCONOMY® Hub acts as a link between business, society and science and aims to position itself internationally as a network of excellence and innovation for the circular economy and bioeconomy.
